The present book envisions the widowhood rites andinheritance among the Talensi and Nabdam people of theUpper East Region, highlighting the similarities and differencesbetween both districts and their human rights implications.The book compiles the ethnic groups practice widowhoodrites and inheritance. In both districts, widows prefer to beinherited by their grandsons so that they are free to choose aman of their choice and still hold on to their deceasedhusband assets. In both ethnic groups, the widows go througha period of confinement during which her movement andliberties are restricted. In terms of difference, the number ofdays designated for both practices differ from district todistrict. Whilst 10 days are set aside for widowhood rites inthe Nabdam setting, 8 days are used in the Talensi setting.Whilst the Talensi widow would hold the calabash as asymbol of husband, the Nabdam widow holds it for otherreasons other than just a symbol of her husband. The Talensi(Talis group) widow would, together with her eldest son anddaughter sit on the sheep and an elder will slaughter it. TheNabdams on the other hand would strangle a goat and part ofthe skin is used to cover only the private of the part of thedead for burial which is term as (“kumo-suuoluko”).
